Windows 10 End of Life: Why now matters for your Cyber Security
What’s happening?
Windows 10 End of Life means that Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 10 as of 14 October 2025. (Microsoft) This means PCs still running Windows 10 will no longer receive security patches, updates or official technical support.
Why it matters
- When an operating system no longer receives security fixes, any newly‐discovered vulnerability remains open. Hackers know this and target unsupported systems. (Windows Central)
- Software and hardware suppliers often follow the platform’s support lifecycle. Even if your OS runs, apps may lose compatibility or stop getting updates. (Microsoft Learn)
- For a small business like yours (and your clients), this means increased risk of malware, data leaks, and regulatory issues (especially where cyber security is expected).
What you (or your clients) should do now about Windows 10 End of Life
- Check if the PC supports Windows 11 – many machines bought in the last few years will qualify. Upgrade if possible.
- If upgrade isn’t feasible immediately – consider enrolling in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 as a short-term bridge. (Microsoft Support)
- Ensure backups are in place – Make sure critical data is backed up, preferably to cloud or an off-site system, so that if a breach/a failure occurs you can recover.
- Review your cyber security baseline – Ensure anti-malware is active, firewall enabled, software up-to-date (on the OS and applications), and that phishing training is in place.
- Plan hardware refresh – Where a PC is too old to support Windows 11, it may be more cost-effective in the medium term to replace it rather than keep it unsupported.
- Communicate to clients – If you support clients, flag this change now so they understand the risk and the need to act.
Final thoughts on Windows 10 End of Life
While it might feel like “my PC still works so it’s fine”, the end of support date is a real turning point. From 14 October 2025, Windows 10 systems will be much more vulnerable. Acting now is much better than reacting after an incident.
